What is a Sageo?

SageoA sageo is a length of cord, made of either cotton or silk, tied through the kurikata on the saya (scabbard) of a Samurai sword. The sageo is tied in a very fancy style knot to keep it decorative, but is actually used to tie the saya to a Samurai's obi (belt).

These knots will very depending on the length of cord used and the amount of knots tied. Once unraveled, these knots can be very difficult to replicate by unskilled hands. It can take many weeks of practice to learn how to tie even a basic sageo. See below:
